National Civil Rights Museum

We went to the National Civil Rights Museum here in Memphis and I left with a new appreciation for this period in history. Abolishing segregation was something I always thought of as being a long time ago and half way across the country, but seeing all the history behind it brought it much closer to home. After spending the summer in the south, it has opened my eyes to the racism and bigotry that is alive in our day. It is extremely sad the way people treat each other and the intolerance and injustice that goes on. Racism does not affect only minorities, but all races. I have a great admiration for Dr. Martin Luther King and the work he did to progress in creating equal rights for all races.
The museum was actually built around the hotel where he was assassinated. I didn't realize this until I was standing in the room, which was left in the same condition as it was April 4, 1968, and looking out the window to the balcony where he stepped outside and was shot.
They also had a bus from the 60's and a lifesize statue of Rosa Parks. When you sat down on the seats in the bus, a voice came over the speaker and yelled at you to get up. I admire her determination to stand up for her rights even if it meant she would be arrested. I take for granted many of the freedoms I enjoy today. Especially the rights I have as a woman, when compared to all the women throughout history. I've never had to fight for freedom to believe what I want or to be able to do the everyday things which other people had to fight for only decades ago. An experience like this is definitely something that makes you snap out of your everyday thoughts and come to a greater appreciation for the place you are in life and the opportunity to live in this period in time.

Wow, Anica. That would have been really cool to see. I love learning about that time, even though there were a whole lotta bad things going on. Sometimes going places like that gives you a quick "eye-opener" on life and how blessed we really are. Thanks for sharing that post!

I hardly changed any diapers in the hospital and unless I was feeding her I had to fight him to hold her. He claims I got to hold her for the last 9 months, it's hardly the sa me. Our family of four I DID IT! I had set a goal for myself to deliver naturally with this baby (I had an epidural with em and don't get me wrong I loved it.) I had been having some serious labor pains for the past several weeks and thought because of this I probably wouldn't realize when it was time for the real thing. I had hair appointments scheduled all day Saturday and was doing my last one (thank heavens it was my mom) when my water broke. She stil...

6 Week Flu

SYMPTONS: FREQUENT VOMITING, EXCESSIVE FATIGUE, NAUSEA, LACK OF MOTIVATION SIDE EFFECTS: HOUSE TURNS INTO A PIG PEN, FAMILY MEMBERS WEAR DIRTY UNDERWEAR FOR SEVERAL DAYS, MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY ARE ACCUSED OF HAVING EATING DISORDERS FROM MALNUTRITION, YOUR BED & COUCH HAVE A PERMANENT INDENT, AND THE CARPET FROM HERE TO THE BATHROOM HAVE A WELL WORN PATH, PEOPLE THINK YOU HAVE FALLEN OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH My friend recently told me there's a chance she "might" be pregnant. When I asked what might meant, she told me it could just be the flu. I laughed at her until I started experiencing the same symptoms. Even after a positive pregnancy test I worried that it might be all in my head. Thank heavens for a trip to the doctor, he confirmed that: WE ARE HAVING BABY NUMBER 2 !!!!!! I apologize to any of you who have asked recently when we are having more kids or why I am sick, and I didn't give you a straight answer . . . well now you know!
